"New feature film from writer/director Ben Sharrock.
Limbo is an offbeat observation of refugees waiting to be granted asylum on a fictional remote Scottish island. It focuses on Omar, a young Syrian musician who is burdened by the weight of his grandfather’s oud, which he has carried all the way from his homeland. The idiosyncratic stylistic sensibilities of Sharrock’s filmmaking style blend drama with melancholic absurdist humour, a tonal combination that created critical acclaim and a strong festival buzz for his and producer Irune Gurtubai’s first feature Pikadero." Director of Cannes Thierry Fremaux noted that while the selection begins and ends with prominent Disney-owned titles — Fox Searchlight’s “French Dispatch” and Pixar’s “Soul” — it’s filled with potential discoveries. He singled out the Scottish long-take refugee drama “Limbo” and Nina Thyberg’s “Pleasure” as two hidden gems.
